It’s becoming harder than ever to get by without a credit card. People find it almost impossible to make travel or restaurant reservatons, or to buy anything online without one. Before you sign on the dotted line, though, here are some facts about credit cardsthat you need to think about.

Don’t take out too many cards. Usually, you will only really use one or two, so be selective and choose and use the ones with the best rates. You’ll be more likely to keep up with payments, too. Take a look at your spending habits and adjust the number of cards accordingly. Just because you are getting tons of offers for new cards, does not mean that you have to take them all.

And, don’t get a card just because it comes with an impossibly-low rate. Many card issuers offer “teaser rates”, promotional rates designed to suck people in. However, once that promotional period is up, the rate will rise sharply. Being late with payments can cause the rate to skyrocket as well. Concentrate more on the long-term rate that comes with the card. And, while the interest rate is important, it’s not the only consideration you need to make. If you are one of the lucky few that manages to pay their entire balance each month, interest isn’t even an issue for you.

Find out how the card’s billing cycle works. Will the interest apply to purchases from the day you got the card, or is there an interest free grace period? How many days between billing cycles do you have to pay the balance? Knowing when and how you are billed will save you a lot of money in the form of interest and late fees.

Read your credit card’s terms and conditions carefully, so that you understand exactly how you will be penalized if you make a late payment. Most card issuers apply late payment penalties and other fees to the principal, so if you don’t pay them off, you will end up with even more fees tacked on to what you already owe.

Knowing a little more about your cards and how they work can keep you from having to
